Chapter Sixteen

The gardens in the park reminded me of Summersby House. A manor house with a garden and farm animals and Sir John and Abby’s sons’ outgrown toys. And then I realized I had the perfect place to take them.

If only Abby and Sir John agreed.

“Come on,” I said in German, “I need to go back to the flat and make a phone call.”

I rushed from my front door to the telephone in the hall and asked the operator for a trunk call. Gerhard and Heinrich followed me in and again sat together in one of the two stuffed chairs in the drawing room, looking around in an effort not to be bored. It took a minute before I heard a maid come on the line. Almost immediately after, I heard Abby’s voice.

After I explained the basic story about the boys, Abby said, “Just a moment. Let me talk to John.”

I strained to hear their conversation, but the hum on the line meant I couldn’t make out a single word. I looked again into the drawing room, knowing I had to find a way to keep my promise.

Abby finally came back onto the line and I sent up another prayer. “Well, why don’t we try it out for a week or two and see if we suit each other.” She sounded not the least bit hesitant, as if she expected a good outcome with her new lodgers. “What train do you think you’ll be on? I suppose the five o’clock. I’ll meet you at the station. And you will stay the night? John is going to want to hear all about this.”

“Official secrets and all that.”

Using her no-nonsense voice, Abby said, “Oh, we’ve been through that already, Livvy. We just want to know what we’re facing.”

“I hope you won’t be facing anything but two delightful boys who need to learn English and how to help you around the garden.” But their mother had been murdered, and I suspected an English person was the killer.

“Any time two little boys are the subject of official secrets, there has to be more to the story.”

“I’ll tell you and Sir John what I can.”

“Good. I’ll see you at the station.”

When we hung up, I walked into the drawing room and sat on the sofa. “I’m taking you to the countryside to stay with my cousin and her husband. Have you ever lived in the countryside before?” I asked in German.

Heinrich shook his head.

“Will they take both of us?” Gerhard asked.

“Of course. They have two sons of their own. They’re older and away at school, but you’ll meet them on school holidays. They’re great fun and play football and cricket. And I’m sure they must have a bicycle or two that would fit you.”

“A bicycle?” For the first time, Gerhard had a gleam in his eyes.

“Animals?” Heinrich asked.

“A bicycle and horses and cows and pigs.” I thought so, but I had never paid any attention. “At least around the estate. And a kitchen garden.”

Now Heinrich showed a spark of interest.
